Trustee: Dr Lorraine Marneweck
Dr Lorraine Marneweck was awarded her PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2004. As well as serving as a trustee, she is an executive director of Class Act Educational Services.
Below, Lorraine shares some of her memories and thoughts on life, education and Class Act!
I went to school in Nigeria, Scotland, England and South Africa. My happiest memories are of going to one high school in South Africa compared to 10 primary schools all over the world! To me, consistency is the answer.
Through my engagement with Class Act, I have come to realise that hard work pays off. I have also learnt that we tend to make too many assumptions about the people and institutions we work with; this can be a dangerous mistake to make.
My idea of perfect happiness is having my work life and personal life well balanced. You need to work, but you also need to play!
I consider my greatest professional achievement to be getting my PhD in my 40’s. This was the culmination of what I had learnt about education and development thus far. I use what I learnt from the PhD on a daily basis in my work for Class Act. Personally my biggest achievement is my well balanced son who manages his work, his life and his mother really well!
Education is the gateway to a full and prosperous life so long as we understand education in the fullest sense of the world. Education is not just about qualifications but it is even more importantly about wisdom and kindness as well. Some very qualified people are not – in my opinion – really educated! And some totally unqualified people are truly educated through their lived experiences.
I believe that Class Act is poised for greatness! The organisation has learnt so much about education over the last several years that it can truly offer exceptional services to its different clients and beneficiaries.
I serve as a Trustee on the Class Act Board because I am committed to education and development. I also believe that Class Act is the best vehicle through which my vision can be realised.
I draw inspiration from the people around me. I learn a lot every day from the inspirational people I work with. You don’t have to look outside for inspiration, it is right inside your own home, office and community.
