PROJECT: EARLY GRADE READING STUDY 2 (EGRS 2)
BENIFICIERIES: RANDOMLY SELECTED SCHOOLS IN THE GERT SIBANDE DISTRICT AND RGE EHLANZENI DISTRICT
DURATION: 2016 - 2019
The Early Grade Reading Study 2 (EGRS 2) has been running since 2016, and will end in 2019. The study is a Randomised Controlled Trial which evaluates the best way to support teachers while teaching English First Additional Language (EFAL). Two interventions have been implemented in randomly selected schools in the Gert Sibande District and the Ehlanzeni District – both of which lie in Mpumalanga. Findings from EGRS 1 show that parental input does not make a discernible positive impact, and that the coaching intervention has the greatest positive impact on learning outcomes. Therefore, the two interventions implemented in EGRS 2, are different forms of coaching. Molteno are the financial management for EGRS 2 while Class Act are the project management.
A traditional coaching strategy, where coaches visit teachers once a month for intensive coaching and training. Coaches organise ‘needs driven’ workshops in cluster groups. Teachers are supplied with structured lesson plans as well as reading material. This intervention is spread across 50 schools in the selected districts
A virtual coaching strategy implemented across 50 different schools in the selected districts. In this intervention, a virtual coaching team works with teachers via email, telephonic calls and WhatsApp. Teachers are supplied with the same structured learning programme on iPads.
