PROJECT: Incremental Introduction of African Languages (IIAL)

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has commissioned Class Act to conduct a review of the pilot implementation of Incremental Introduction of African Languages (IIAL) in Grade 1 classes in four provinces. This review begins with an analysis of the Grade 1 First Additional Language curriculum in all previously marginalised African languages. It also presents an analysis of the DBE workbooks that teachers have been given to assist in the classroom. Filed visits will be conducted in 20 schools to review the implementation of the IIAL policy in schools and Grade 1 classrooms. A composite report will be written with a clear set of recommendations for the DBE as they roll out the policy in all Grade 1 schools in 2015.
