PROJECT: Analysis of Grade 5 Learner Maths and Language exercise books and DBE workbooks
CLIENT: National Education Evaluation and Development Unit (NEEDU)
VALUE: R500 000
DURATION: Four Months
The project began with an analysis of the official curriculum for both Maths and Language (Grade 5). This shed light on what teachers were meant to achieve in their teaching. In an attempt to reveal the actual curricula that were delivered to the learners, exercise books and DBE workbooks were analysed. Conclusions were drawn about the differences between the expected and enacted curricula in both subjects.
Class Act conducted an analysis of the Grade 5 Language and Maths CAPS curricula. This analysis can be used by NEEDU to recommend updates to the official policy. In addition, interesting issues relating to teacher agency and how it needs to be guided were also revealed.
During the course of this project, Class Act collaborated with the Centre for Evaluation and Assessment at the University of Pretoria. This collaboration is important and Class Act believes that more work will emerge as a result.
