Trustee: Mrs Penelope Groome
Penny Groome had the pleasure of teaching at Jeppe High Preparatory School and at Sacred Heart College before moving to the NGO world. She is an executive director of Class Act as well as serving as a board member.
Some of Penny’s thoughts on life and education are shared below.
As a child, what I loved most about school was making lifelong friends and learning how to read. Throughout my life, friends and books have been a wonderful source of joy to me.
Through my engagement with Class Act, I have come to realise that in South Africa, language is a gatekeeper to success. As educators it is our responsibility to equip all learners with good reading skills and conceptual language in their home language. We must then equip learners with fluent, cognitive academic English that they will require for tertiary education and to function effectively in the commercial world.
My idea of perfect happiness is laughing, talking and eating with my husband, family and good friends!
I consider my greatest achievement to have played an instrumental role in the growth of Class Act from its position as a start-up NGO to now being a significant presence in South African education development.
I believe that Class Act is in a state of constant evolution, always pushing forward with new strategies to address the huge challenges facing South African education. I also believe that as we move forward with technologically innovative programmes, we are set to take another leap forward in changing the lives of millions of learners.
I draw inspiration from my children, who constantly challenge me to think about things in different ways. Their ideas are an ever-present reminder that the world is changing rapidly, and that education needs a radical shake-up!
